On November 18, 2014, the Toronto Maple Leafs played the Nashville Predators on Canada’s home turf. As the American singer belted out the national anthem, her mic cut out partway through the song. But instead of meeting the technical difficulties with cheers, hoots, and hollers, the stadium full of Canadian fans did something that stunned the U.S.
As the singer’s audio cuts out mid-song, listen to the crowd completely step up and, in unison, finish the national anthem together. YouTube user bagabus says, “I happened to be filming the anthem because I have 2 daughters, 2 and 4 years old who always stand up with me and sing both countries anthems when we are watching the games from home on TV, so since I had the chance to watch a game live, I thought I’d record it for them to see later at home. Turns out it was a feel good moment for Canadians and Americans, and I’m glad I caught it on video and could share it!”
The video quickly went viral and has now been seen over 5 million times! Even though the Leafs lost that day, their fans showed an unrivaled display of teamwork and respect.
