It takes a certain kind of person to become a doctor. Aside from a desire to help others no matter the circumstances, doctors have to have pretty strong stomachs as well.

But Philadelphia’s Mütter Museum is packed with photos of strange historical medical conditions and oddities that would make even the strongest doctor squirm. And when you see what they are, you won’t be able to sleep for weeks.

1. Chinese aristocrats used to grow their fingernails to ridiculous lengths. Much like the practice of binding women’s feet, it was meant to show how little the individual needed to work with his hands and prove that they were of high social standing.

2. This skeleton once belonged to actor John Aasen, who was over seven feet tall. He was actually a sideshow “freak” before taking his talents to Hollywood.

3. This 32-year-old man became a triple amputee when his right arm and both legs were crushed by a railroad car.
